SCIENCE EXPLORATION OF EROSION

Think about the two different demonstrations that took place outside this week.

First, explain what we did in the first ditch. Tell about the landforms you saw being formed. Explain how you knew what you were seeing. (example: A valley was formed because a low place between the two mountains was formed.)

Next, the second paragraph will tell about what we did in the ditch at the top of the hill and what you learned.

You will be graded on whether you used all of the vocabulary words correctly and if you followed the directions to form two paragraphs with topic sentences and concluding sentences and had all required information.

Use the following vocabulary in 2 well written paragraphs. Be sure to include an explanation of how you know each of the things you learned. You may type it here or write on a separate sheet of notebook paper. You will have 2 days to work on it before turning it in.
erosion sediment meander canyon delta
river basin deposition slope dam lake

On dirt day our teacher Mrs.Greenslade built to dirt mountains. The first one was made on a long slope that lead into the drain. She got a water hose, and showed us a demonstration of erosion. Erosion is the wearing away of the Earth's surface by wind or water. In this case it was water. As the water poured it formed a canyon.A canyon is a flat landform with steep sides. When the dirt was cleared away the water formed a river with meanders.Meanders are slow turns in a river. Now in the back of the dirt mountain a lake had formed. At the end of the river the sediment was being deposited into the drain. This process is called deposition that's when the sediment is deposited. At the end it made a delta.A delta is a fan shaped deposit.

When we were finished with that ,our group headed toward the next dirt mountain. When we got their they explained hoe this slope was lot steeper that would make the water run faster.First we got into little groups and made dams. Then Mrs.Greenslade turned on the water. As the water ran down the slope the mountain formed a basin. The water went through all of our dams, but it was fun. That is what we learned on dirt day.
